Youth Speak

YOUthSpeak inspires educational and supportive programs for youth in the Byron Shire.  YOUthSpeak events break the silence around sexuality, relationships, romance and matters of the heart. Young people have an opportunity to strengthen their voice, clarify their values, communicate and connect in new and often unfamiliar ways. Sharing ideas and feelings, people talk openly and freely, or simply come along to listen.  It has been recognised by parents and community elders how important it is to create a safe place for young people to get together and share experiences around an often not talked about topic in a respectful, authentic and valuable way.

The feedback speaks about how powerful this shared experience is for young people - they gain self confidence, a deeper understanding of themselves and it impacts and makes a huge difference to their lives.  YOUthSpeak is for all young people, whatever their sexual orientation – everyone 14 to 24 years old are welcome!

To date YOUthSpeak has been an extraordinary success, with young people leading the discussions – so YOUthSpeak is very much for young people by young people. There is a core team of educators and community elders, health professionals and parents (including Amrita Hobbs & Ken Connell), involved in supporting the program.

Young people are invited to confidentially contribute or to simply listen, in a way that is comfortable for them and to bring their friends with them.

YOUthSpeak is an outstanding success!

Sunday 2 December 2012

Biodynamic #500 Field Spraying Day
Teachers, students, parents and our local biodynamic community are invited to join Shearwater school staff for a biodynamic 500 spraying Field Day, on Thursday the 9th of August, from 1:45pm to 4pm.
Please meet at Primary School open play area (outside the Eurythmy Room) with a stainless steel bucket, preferably, but a plastic one is ok. We will provide the 500 preparation, rain water and tree branches for the spreading. The aim is, after 1 hour of continuous stirring, to coordinate the spraying from 3pm, walking in an ingoing spiral, starting from the perimeter of the area to be sprayed. This event is best done late afternoon, when the energy of the Earth is ‘breathed in’. Autumn or early spring, when the moon phase is in a descending period, is the best time to perform this activity.
Although still a bit cool, the sun is returning to Earth, the wattles are covered in blossoms, the bees are getting busy and the silkworms are just coming out of their eggs. So please come, with prayers in your heart, and join us in blessing and waking the school grounds with the 500 preparations. We will need as many volunteers as possible, as the event is intended to cover, in a short time, the whole primary, high school and the new hall areas.
According to the Bio-Dynamic Manual by Alan Johnstone, by using the 500 preparation we are quickening the inner earth life. He explains that within the household of nature, substances are continually passing from one kingdom into another and back again. The myriad of pathways and cycles weave their ways through rocks, plants and animals. Within and between each there is a cooperative working together of the appropriate forces.
Alan adds that such forces, described by Rudolf Steiner as etheric and astral, bring the substances into streaming rhythmic movement and then shape these bodies of rhythmic movements into the forms we see in nature – the animals and plants of our agriculture life.
Finally, Alan writes in the chapter on 500 that the soil is the middle kingdom between the hard mineral crystalline rocks and the soft sappy plants. It is at this point, according to his manual, where the 500 gets its work done, by waking everything up.
RSVP Nadia, at the school office.

Isabeau Schubert, who is in Year 9 at Shearwater has her own exhibition at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery from April 4thto 29th April.  Entitled “Stain” it builds on the work done for her Personal Interest Project (PIP) in Year 8.   The gallery curator was impressed with her work and invited her to exhibit at the gallery during Youth Week.

This exhibition “Stained” includes 5 new pieces, with reference to: coal seam gas mining, ocean oil spills, deforestation and urban intrusion.  The creative use of textiles on a metal armature allows a three dimensional quality to be achieved.

“These pieces represent my response to imagery depicting the degradation of our natural environment.  They are deliberately tactile, yet fragile, strong, yet delicate … just like our planet.”

Isabeau Schubert, Byron Bay, 2012

Other students from high schools around Ballina are also represented in a group show.
